When it comes to going all into the digital nomad lifestyle, many questions can come with it, such as how to stay online all the time, how to keep my tech safe and where I should get my VPN from. And many others. So to make things easier for you, if you are new to the digital nomad community or you’ve hit a bump in the road (pardon the pun!) then I hope to have a solution for you.
When committing to a digital nomad lifestyle, there are new and creative ways for you to stay productive and happy but there is always a risk factor and as you have a commitment to work while you travel, you need to always think, Is this accessible for me? So to make sure you have everything boxed off, we’ve got a backup plan plus something extra for every problem you might face so let’s dive right into some of the best tech hacks for nomadic life.

The first thing you want to have boxed off is the safety and security you have around all of your technology. Phone, laptop, WiFi and all of the above. The last thing you want to have to pay for is another new laptop or phone, plus, while you are working away, it’s not ideal that you are missing work but also having to shell out for new tech.
Some good ways to keep your technology secure could be through disguise. I’ve seen a creative and handy way to hide your valuables without costing a lot of money. Some cases and stickers can camouflage your laptop to look like journals or books that the common eye won’t notice are high-tech pieces.
This is a perfect solution for those living on the road or traveling around areas where theft is pretty common. Not to mention, there are extra measures you should always take, like storing them not in the open and hidden away in moments you aren’t there. Having things out in the open, especially if you are living the van life, is an invitation to robbers so you want to keep things out of the way and disguised.
When it comes to traveling with your tech from here to there and everywhere, you want it to be easily accessible, secure and by your side, so that’s why finding the perfect carry-on is essential. This is perfect for those who might be traveling few and far between but also for those who enjoy something simple.
Keep your tech secure in a handy padded bag or in your carry. This way, you will never lose it in transport, as we know how airports can be your technology, which is a key part of living as a digital nomad.
While this is completely dependent on where you’ve decided to reside, you might get lucky, as it’s more common for hotels, cafes and restaurants to offer free wifi to their guests. If you have no other option, you can get comfortable in one of these spots, work surrounded by people, and get a spot for lunch and coffee while you work. This is very motivating, as well as a nice change of scenery compared to working in the room you sleep in.
This one will depend on the kind of work you are doing, but for example, if you don't want to drain your hotspot while you are conducting work that doesn't require a WiFi signal, such as Google Docs, Trello or other apps, you can switch between switching on and off. Not only are you preserving your data but you are also getting the most out of your offline time. It might just be a good idea to stick to the place's signal or change your data plan to unlimited.

If you plan on doing some serious exploring, you will, of course, need adaptors. While this one isn’t a huge thing to worry about, as you can get them from the airport, online and most large stores, they are a quick fix. It’s just always good to have a gentle reminder in place.
The same goes for portable chargers; they are good in crisis but don’t be too worked up about them if you misplace or forget them, as they are available in most places.
Traveling around the world and connecting with different internets does come with a risk factor and is a cyber security issue. A good way to protect yourself from hackers is through a reliable VPN (Virtual Prove Network), which secures all of your internet traffic by sending it through an encrypted tunnel. It’s a quick and easy way to protect yourself from scams. Some banks, especially Revolut, aren’t looking to refund those who have been victimized by these sorts of scams so it’s always better to be safe than sorry so you aren’t begging for a Revolut scam refund while trying to work.
If you are like me and people talking, dogs barking and other sounds distract you from getting in the zone, then investing in some hand noise-canceling headphones could be the key to remaining productive and preventing any overstimulation. I can imagine this would be a great investment for those digital nomads who have ADHD. Staying locked onto one thing can be difficult so this might be key.

Whether you are an experienced digital nomad or you are about to embark on your first journey, there are a lot of things that will come through trial and error, but that’s the fun part. Mainly focus on keeping your tech safe and secure from damage, theft and hackers, and at the same time, enjoy your life on the move.
